I think we have different perspectives on China I've seen the bad side in the backwaters of China and you've seen the better side elsewhere so if you are enjoying yourself in China then I'm pleased for you. Not sure flying in China used to be real white knuckle stuff

I don't really do rail unless from Beijing - Tianjin or from Shanghai to Nanjing/Ningbo. Multiple weekly domestic flights here are enough for my stress levels, and I say that genuinely grateful for the experience I've had here so far.

Great wall of China Wiki, I know this myself but this is the factual evidence
While portions north of Beijing and near tourist centers have been preserved and even extensively renovated, in many other locations the Wall is in disrepair. Those parts might serve as a village playground or a source of stones to rebuild houses and roads.[57] Sections of the Wall are also prone to graffiti and vandalism, while inscribed bricks were pilfered and sold on the market for up to 50 renminbi.[58] Parts have been destroyed because the Wall is in the way of construction.[59] A 2012 report by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage states that 22% of the Ming Great Wall has disappeared, while 1,961 km (1,219 mi) of wall have vanished.[58] More than 60 km (37 mi) of the wall in Gansu province may disappear in the next 20 years, due to erosion from sandstorms. In some places, the height of the wall has been reduced from more than 5 m (16 ft 5 in) to less than 2 m (6 ft 7 in). Various square lookout towers that characterize the most famous images of the wall have disappeared. Many western sections of the wall are constructed from mud, rather than brick and stone, and thus are more susceptible to erosion.[60] In 2014 a portion of the wall near the border of Liaoning and Hebei province was repaired with concrete. The work has been much criticized.[61]

I'd like to visit there after the apocalypse has wiped the Chinese people out, as loads of it looks pretty cool and I'm sure the wall is something to behold in the flesh.
Of all of our overseas offices, that mob are the oddest set of rude fuckers going.
They certainly don't mince their words that lot :o)

I went to Shaolin Temple ruined by hoards of Chinese tourists guides blowing whistles and tourists pushing to the front of queues at each attraction
I've heard the same as below the Terracotta army is a copy of the originals. Too long to C+P So link to full article and C+P about not original
https://theplanetd.com/terracotta-warriors-xian-china-emperor-qin/
We wondered if any of them were original or if they were all replicas.
During our tour we were told that the underground army had been raided at one point in time and peasants burnt it to the ground. It contradicts everything we were told by the same guide.
One minute she tells us that everyone who knew about the Terracotta Warriors and the Emperors tomb was killed, the next minute she tells us that peasants raided it and burned it to the ground.
Which is true we do not know. But if peasants burnt it to the ground, that means that people knew about it.
In China, history is interpreted differently depending on your guide. We are told that the archeologists are the only people allowed to use the clay from a nearby mountain to rebuild the warriors. Okay, so are the warriors we are looking at have anything original to them at all or are they completely rebuilt by the archeologists using the genuine mountain clay that our guide so often spoke about?
We don’t know. Unfortunately, I don’t have any way of researching because we am in China and most of the Internet is blocked due to censorship. For now, I will blissfully accept anything that my guide tells me and believe it whole heartedly.

What time of year do you intend to go? - it does get fucking cold up north in winter Any ideas as to where? Or what interests you: rapidly growing cities, historical buildings, scenery, food? (And if food how adventurous are you?)
I first went in 1993 - which was the last time I was in downtown Guangzhou. And looks like I might finally return to Guangzhou the week-after-next for a couple of days.
Other than that, I've done Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Jinan, Qingdao-Huangdao (i.e. not old Qingdao), Luoyang, Xian (1 night only, didn't get to the terracotta army), Nanjing, Shanghai, Nanchang, Ji'an, Jiangxi-Fuzhou, Panyu, Shenzhen, Nanning, Kunming, Pu'er, Dalian, Shenyang - and possibly a couple more cities over the years. Some of these just the once, others god knows how many times over the years.
For cities, I think Dalian or Kunming would be my favourite. For scenery, Pu'er - though sorting out travel logistics to get out and about in the mountains (near to Vietnamese and Lao borders, etc) might be a bit challenging (or expensive)
Places I'd like to have seen: Xian (properly, though I'm wary of tourist numbers), Hangzhou and Suzhou (once again, both overrun with local tourists these days I'm told), possibly Xishuangbanna (though Pu'er probably has 70%+ of what Xishuangbanna has to offer ,but without the tourist numbers), Chengdu, Changsha (Changsha largely for the food - Hunanese is probably my favourite Chinese cuisine alongside some of the Pu'er food), possibly to have done the Ice Festival in Ha'erbin also (though not sure I can be doing with minus 40 these days, nor the tourist numbers either!)

Beijing - not what you'd expect, but I liked it. Brilliant sights (and a 'must-do' because of them), really varied food. There's an area of bars where you can haggle over the beer price.
Shanghai - really liked it, old meets new, almost European. Crazy.
Xi'an - bit of a procession of tourists, but interesting because of the Army and therefore essential. Nice place, good nightlife (you can haggle over beer prices).
Guilin - now that's more like it. More of a Chinese feeling and absolutely beautiful. Less English spoken (well, there was a few years ago) which makes it more interesting.

Did 6 months living & backpacking over there...incredible experience but not somewhere I would consider as a 'holiday' destination. What are you interested in doing? There are huge differences in regions. Also timing is important - weather can really effect the air pollution.
